Wow, has the past week been rough! The honeymoon was beautiful, but I'm afraid it has come to an end. After a relatively easy couple of weeks, we're now coping with major sleep deprivation, lots of crying and a frustrating medical situation. We adore this precious girl, so she's worth every sleepless moment (and after all, we did sign up for this), but it's definitely a challenging time.
Sweet Leila Madeline has been struggling with serious pain (and projectile spit-ups) during eating, and we're trying everything to help her feel better. We've been through Similac, Good Start with Natural Cultures, and now she's drinking Isomil Advance (soy formula). We initially thought she might have a dairy allergy, but--since she's not loving the soy either--it's looking like acid reflux or something physiological may be the culprit. Either way, our baby is suffering...and we're going to get to the bottom of it!
The doctor recommended Mylanta (to coat the esophagus and tummy before feedings) and prescribed a low dose of baby Zantac. We're hopeful that the regimen with take away the pain without any side effects. It feels so odd to give medication to a three week old, but it's much better than the alternative.
You do everything you can to protect your child--and when something gets in the way, you feel so helpless. Man alive, this is one of the hardest aspects of parenting!
Praying for wisdom, guidance, patience and restored health for Leila.

My kiddos are the champs of reflux...let me know if you need any info. I'll be glad to share some tips with you. Rebe was deemed the worst case both our doc. and the specialist has ever seen. Hang in there!

Ohhh, poor little Leila!! I hope the medicine will help. Nic Nic had a rought time with that and I seem to rememeber the Zantac helping..I hope it goes away soon. It's so hard as a parent to see your baby in discomfort of any kind. :( I hope you're all adjusting. Your vaca pics are adorable. Wade is quite the skin boarder.hahah Miss you. I'll talk to you soon...need to catch you up on some things in Jarvis home, too. Blessings, Stacy J
This is my first comment, but I just love your blog and it's been such an encouragement to me and my family. We also worked with Dr. Silber and adopted our precious daughter last year.
Have you tried Enfamil Nutramigen? It's hypoallergenic and it's the only thing my daughter would take after the same symptoms--turns out she's lactose intolerant and I read that 40% of those that are lactose intolerant are also allergic to soy. It was night and day when we got her on the hypoallergenic stuff--it's pricey, but really worth it.

Ramona,
When working with NICU feeding babes and the nutritionists, we find that adding a tsp of rice cereal to the formula sometimes does the trick. Hope your angel feels better soon and you get rest! April
